Blockchain Is Not Solving Real Problems Register for this sessions ▸ Here In very short order, the term "Blockchain" has lost an incredible amount of meaning. With too many jumping on the bandwagon, the market is inundated with projects and use cases that miss the real potential of the technology. We have to begin removing Blockchain from the conversation and ground ourselves in the motivating principles of the technology itself; whether it is consumer privacy, data ownership, trust or even participation in the global economy, the world is faced with serious problems that this technology could ultimately help us in at least partially solving. But if we do not unpack what is real and what is not, we can lose sight of the potential. In this presentation, John Bates-who leads data science, machine learning and AI in the Adobe Analytics business unit-will present his 4-p... (more)

Overview of the OpenStack Cloud

Overview OpenStack is an Infrastructure as a Service offering. (see my prior post for an explanation of IaaS). OpenStack is an OpenSource project, founded by RackSpace, NASA and others. OpenStack can be deployed as a public or private cloud. The OpenStack projects are: CINDER, GLANCE, KEYSTONE, NOVA, QUANTUM, SWIFT. OpenStack Compute: (NOVA) Project NOVA, or OpenStack Compute, provisions and manages on-demand virtual machines and associated resources: CPU, Memory, Disk and Network. Virtual machines can be started, stopped, suspended, created and deleted, while network options for a virtual machine are static, DHCP, or IPv6. The virtual machines run on hypervisors such as XEN or KVM, but others are supported too - even VMware ESXi! Users and administrators use the GUI to request virtual machines, while developers may typically use an API. Security? Of course there are se... (more)

Microservices Unplugged | @DevOpsSummit #IoT #DevOps #CD #Microservices

Given my (well-known and enduring) interest in all aspects of services, I have followed Martin Fowler's writing on microservices. But I will admit I always found the original paper more confusing than insightful. And in my client work I have resisted the temptation to use a microservices pattern, for precisely the reason that it would more than likely confuse. So I was interested to see the book Building Microservices by Sam Newman published last month, particularly as Newman is part of the Thoughtworks stable, which presumably means it is authoritative. Right off the bat, Newman advises that we should "think of microservices as a specific approach for SOA in the same way that XP or Scrum are specific approaches for Agile Software development". These analogies are very interesting because my expectation was that microservices is a pattern. So I might infer that micr... (more)

Six Daily Tips for #DevOps | @DevOpsSummit #AI #CloudNative #Serverless

At its core DevOps is all about collaboration. The lines of communication must be opened and it takes some effort to ensure that they stay that way. It's easy to pay lip service to trends and talk about implementing new methodologies, but without action, real benefits cannot be realized. Success requires planning, advocates empowered to effect change, and, of course, the right tooling. To bring about a cultural shift it's important to share challenges. In simple terms, ensuring that everyone knows what everyone else is doing can create a real team spirit and social cohesion that will drive DevOps forward. Here are six tips that can be implemented to help you get there. 1. Stand-ups A daily team meeting where people get an opportunity to review their progress by addressing three simple questions: What did I do yesterday? What will I do today? What might block me fro... CloudEXPO Stories
At CloudEXPO Silicon Valley, June 24-26, 2019, Digital Transformation (DX) is a major focus with expanded DevOpsSUMMIT and FinTechEXPO programs within the DXWorldEXPO agenda. Successful transformation requires a laser focus on being data-driven and on using all the tools available that enable transformation if they plan to survive over the long term. A total of 88% of Fortune 500 companies from a generation ago are now out of business. Only 12% still survive. Similar percentages are found throughout enterprises of all sizes.
Every organization is facing their own Digital Transformation as they attempt to stay ahead of the competition, or worse, just keep up. Each new opportunity, whether embracing machine learning, IoT, or a cloud migration, seems to bring new development, deployment, and management models. The results are more diverse and federated computing models than any time in our history.
