LOS ANGELES, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 03/24/14 -- Inktank, the company delivering Ceph -- the massively scalable, open source, software-defined storage system -- today announced a remarkable turnout for the Ceph Developer Summit for Giant. Earlier this month, dozens of developers from 15 countries on four continents gathered online to share new ideas around the upcoming "Giant" release of Ceph. The popularity of the event reflects how the Ceph community continues to thrive, collaborate, and produce tangible results.
While there were 26 different "blueprint" discussions during the Summit, there were several notable projects that included:
- Accelio RDMA Messenger - This work, done in cooperation with Mellanox, seeks to extend the internal messaging to work over the Accelio transport layer and bring even faster speeds to Ceph.
- Pyramid Erasure Code - Further extending the work added in the "Firefly" major release of Ceph, this project will offer flexible options on the type of algorithm and amount of replicas needed for erasure coded back ends.
- CRUSH Extension - This work seeks to extend the powerful CRUSH algorithm to allow for more flexible and tuneable object placement within a Ceph cluster.
Ceph Ecosystem is Vibrant and Growing
Ceph adoption increased sharply in 2013, as it became the de-facto storage platform for service providers and enterprises deploying public or private clouds, particularly alongside OpenStack. A recent OpenStack User Survey revealed Ceph as the most popular option for distributed block storage among OpenStack users.
