The New Dell Force10 Ethernet Switch Takes the Enterprise by Storm

Dell has long been a power player in the enterprise. Dell’s scalable and robust solutions fit well in just about any industry. They provide the kind of reliability and performance the enterprise needs. In the past, Dell servers have had to rely primarily on third-party Ethernet equipment to move their data across the enterprise. Dell is out to change that.

When Dell acquired Force10 Networks back in 2011, everyone knew that Dell-branded Ethernet equipment wouldn’t be far behind. What remained to be seen, however, is how this equipment would stack up against the competition and what kinds of equipment we’d see in the product line.

The Dell Networking Z9500

The most recent unveil by Dell is a brand new fabric switch called the Dell Networking Z9500. Dell claims that this switch is the densest in the industry, and the claim seems to be proving true so far.

Let’s take a look at the basic specs of this new Ethernet fabric switch:

  • A 3RU device offering rack space optimization to just about any enterprise
  • Up to 132 40 GbE ports
  • Expandable to 528 10 GbE ports
  • More than 10 Tbps throughput at a lower level of latency than other switches.

The ability to support Gigabit, 10GT and 40G enterprises is a brilliant move by Dell. Enterprise customers find themselves at various stages of virtualization in their network fabric, and this kind of flexibility means Dell meets their customers right where they are today while still providing plenty of room to grow and upgrade.

Simplified Fabric Setup

In addition to this phenomenal density and versatility, the new Dell Switch features a new controller that streamlines the process involve in setting up the Ethernet fabric for the enterprise. The Dell Active Fabric Controller offers a zero-touch option that can be used in OpenStack environments.

As more and more enterprise IT organizations are making the switch over to NVF and networks that are defined by software but enabled with Ethernet fabrics, this switch gives Dell a way to get into a marketplace that has in the past been solidy held by Cisco and other major players.

The enterprise is ripe for the kind of lower-cost Ethernet fabric solutions that Dell has to offer, and the Dell Networking Z9500 is the premier player in that show.
