Extreme Networks, Flextronics and Oracle Join the OpenDaylight Project

39 Member Companies Now Participating in the Industry's Largest Open SDN and NFV Effort

SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 06/05/14 -- The OpenDaylight Project, a community-led and industry-supported open source platform to advance Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Functions Virtualization (NFV), today announced that Extreme Networks, Flextronics and Oracle are joining the project to more quickly bring to the industry an open, common platform for SDN and NFV. The community and code base continue to mature as the project prepares for its second software release, Helium, due out this fall.

"Every day the OpenDaylight community is debating and iterating on what SDN and NFV should look like," said Neela Jacques, executive director, OpenDaylight. "This open source approach means nothing is sacred, anything can be rewritten. Our main purpose is to benefit the industry-at-large, not any one vendor. More voices at the table means stronger debate and better code. We are thrilled to see such a diversity of new members joining who represent an even broader range of perspectives on SDN and NFV."

About the newest OpenDaylight Project members:

Extreme Networks provides high-performance, open networking innovations for enterprises, services providers and Internet exchanges. The company delivers high-performance switching and routing products for data center and core-to-edge networks, wired/wireless LAN access, network powered application analytics, unified network management and control. Extreme Networks is headquartered in San Jose, CA and has more than 12,000 customers in over 80 countries.

"As a new member of OpenDaylight, Extreme Networks looks forward to contributing to and benefitting from the community," said Eric Broockman, VP and CTO, Extreme Networks. "The benefits of SDN go well beyond the data center, which is why a common platform like OpenDaylight is critical to the evolving IT industry. Extreme Networks will contribute expertise in the areas of dynamic policy enforcement, Wi-Fi and application analytics to the community. Open source innovation promises to deliver the network infrastructure that enables a focus on applications while reducing both Capex and Opex."

Flextronics is a leading end-to-end supply chain solutions company that delivers design, engineering, manufacturing and logistics services to a range of industries and end-markets. Flextronics service offerings and vertically integrated component technologies optimize customer supply chains by lowering costs, increasing flexibility and reducing time-to-market. Headquartered in Singapore, Flextronics has manufacturing locations in 30 countries and across four continents.

"With the advent of convergence, SDN and cloud, we see rapid shifts in the end-markets of our OEM customers. By leveraging open source platforms such as OpenDaylight, our OEM customers are able to get ahead of these shifts in the IT space," said Dharmesh Jani, VP, Cloud Strategy, Flextronics. "Flextronics further enables the OEMs by offering them the ability to integrate functionality, validate operation and test interoperability right at the point when these products are manufactured. Flextronics supports the pace of innovation for OEMs by seamlessly linking the production stage with the innovation stage."

Oracle engineers hardware and software to work together in the cloud and in the data center. The company is focused on eliminating complexity and simplifying IT to enable over 400,000 customers in over 145 countries to accelerate innovation and create added value for their customers.

"For SDN to go mainstream the industry needs an open and common platform," said Markus Flierl, vice president, Oracle Solaris. "Oracle Solaris 11.2 is engineered for cloud and incorporates an enterprise-class OS, efficient network virtualization, application-driven software-defined networking technology and a full OpenStack distribution to provide comprehensive cloud platform capabilities. Tapping into OpenDaylight will enable us to extend the application-driven SDN capabilities in Oracle Solaris and allow customers to take advantage of a broad ecosystem of OpenDaylight-compatible networking devices and SDN applications. The momentum around the OpenDaylight Project is a strong indicator that the industry wants to go in this direction and we think it will create significant benefits for customers in the long-term."

Since launching 13 months ago, the OpenDaylight community has grown to 195 developers working collaboratively to create an open source platform that can be used within any SDN and NFV architecture. OpenDaylight's next software release, Helium, is scheduled to be made available this fall. The invitation-only OpenDaylight Developer Design Forum takes place September 29-30 in Santa Clara to set the stage for future OpenDaylight releases and explore industry hot topics.

Cloud Expo Breaking News
Cloud Computing is evolving into a Big Three of Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure. Cloud 360: Multi-Cloud Bootcamp, being held Nov 4–5, 2014, in conjunction with 15th Cloud Expo in Santa Clara, CA, delivers a real-world demonstration of how to deploy and configure a scalable and available web application on all three platforms. The Cloud 360 Bootcamp, led by Janakiram MSV, an analyst with Gigaom Research, is the first bootcamp that introduces the core concepts of Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) based on the workings of the Big Three platforms – Amazon EC2, Google Compute Engine, and Azure VMs. Bootcamp attendees will get to see the big picture and also receive the knowledge needed to make the best cloud decisions for their business applications and entire enterprise IT organization.
Scott Jenson leads a project called The Physical Web within the Chrome team at Google. Project members are working to take the scalability and openness of the web and use it to talk to the exponentially exploding range of smart devices. Nearly every company today working on the IoT comes up with the same basic solution: use my server and you'll be fine. But if we really believe there will be trillions of these devices, that just can't scale. We need a system that is open a scalable and by using the URL as a basic building block, we open this up and get the same resilience that the web enjoys.
The Internet of Things is a natural complement to the cloud and related technologies such as Big Data, analytics, and mobility. In his session at Internet of @ThingsExpo, Joe Weinman will lay out four generic strategies – digital disciplines – to exploit emerging digital technologies for strategic advantage. There are 182 billion emails sent every day, generating a lot of data about how recipients and ISPs respond. Many marketers take a more-is-better approach to stats, preferring to have the ability to slice and dice their email lists based numerous arbitrary stats. However, fundamentally what really matters is whether or not sending an email to a particular recipient will generate value. Data Scientists can design high-level insights such as engagement prediction models and content clusters that allow marketers to cut through the noise and design their campaigns around strong, predictive signals, rather than arbitrary statistics. SendGrid sends up to half a billion emails a day for customers such as Pinterest and GitHub. All this email adds up to more text than produced in the entire twitterverse. We track events like clicks, opens and deliveries to help improve deliverability for our customers – adding up to over 50 billion useful events every month. While SendGrid data covers only abo...

Almost everyone sees the potential of Internet of Things but how can businesses truly unlock that potential. The key will be in the ability to discover business insight in the midst of an ocean of Big Data generated from billions of embedded devices via Systems of Discover. Businesses will also need to ensure that they can sustain that insight by leveraging the cloud for global reach, scale and elasticity. In his session at Internet of @ThingsExpo, Mac Devine, Distinguished Engineer at IBM, will discuss bringing these three elements together via Systems of Discover.
The Internet of Things promises to transform businesses (and lives), but navigating the business and technical path to success can be difficult to understand. In his session at 15th Internet of @ThingsExpo, Chad Jones, Vice President, Product Strategy of LogMeIn's Xively IoT Platform, will show you how to approach creating broadly successful connected customer solutions using real world business transformation studies including New England BioLabs and more.
All too many discussions about DevOps conclude that the solution is an all-purpose player: developer and operations guru, complete with pager for round-the-clock duty. For most organizations that is not the way forward. In his session at DevOps Summit, Bernard Golden, Vice President of Strategy at ActiveState, will discuss how to achieve the agility and speed of end-to-end automation without requiring an organization stocked with Supermen and Superwomen.
