Cumulus Networks Now Powers Over 1 Million Switch Ports Worldwide

Cumulus Networks®, the company bringing the power of Linux to networking, today announced its technology now powers well over 1 million switch ports worldwide demonstrating significant traction in the market for its Cumulus Linux offering. The company now serves customers in sizes ranging from webscale to small business, in industries ranging from technology to education, and in multiple markets worldwide that have embraced Cumulus® Linux® software within their data center environments.

Cumulus Networks’ rapidly expanding customer base can be attributed in great part to increased hardware offerings and new purchasing channels. Now supporting 16 hardware platforms, two CPU architectures and five hardware vendors, Cumulus Linux software gives customers the power to build their data center around the specific needs of their business without being locked in by one vendor. With a newly expanded channel partner program covering three strategic regions, the company’s solution is now available to an even broader range of customers.

“Just over a year ago, we brought the transformational impact of Linux out of the data center and introduced it to networking, and enterprises have responded well to its promise of breaking vendor lock-in, increasing performance and significantly reducing hardware costs,” said JR Rivers, co-founder and CEO, Cumulus Networks. “Our continued expansion is a testament to the growing demand in the industry for solutions that empower more choice, ease and flexibility within their data centers. It is now just as easy to choose Cumulus Linux as it is any other solution, and customers are overwhelmingly deciding against vendor lock-in.”

New market opportunities have driven customer demand for Cumulus Linux software. In January, Cumulus Networks announced a reseller agreement with Dell, delivering Cumulus Linux software to Dell’s broad global customer base. Cumulus Networks also oversaw the opening of the first Open Network Install Environment (ONIE) certification lab at the University of San Antonio. An extension of the first Open Compute Project (OCP) Certification Laboratory in North America, the ONIE certification lab helps introduce enterprises interested in open data center approaches to Cumulus Networks’ major contribution to OCP – a major enabler of the implementation of modern data center networking architectures.

Additional Commentary:

BroadSoft

“When Cumulus Networks released ONIE back to the OCP community, we knew the company had a similar philosophy to BroadSoft because that ultimately benefited the consumer,” said Nathan Stratton, VP Technology, BroadSoft. “We believe that the data center’s future lies in a disaggregated model with white-box switching, and ONIE has become a force for enabling new scale-out architectures. We selected Cumulus Linux software for our deployments around the globe not only for its open commitment, but because it’s the only offering that allows us to seamlessly leverage existing investments in homegrown tools, as well as tools like Puppet and Chef.”

IIJ (Internet Initiative Japan)

“IIJ has a strong culture that embraces open tools and practices that optimize the utilization of automation tools to lower total cost of ownership. It’s this culture that led us to leverage Cumulus Linux software in our deployment supporting our web applications,” said Takashi Sogabe, Lead Engineer, IIJ. “With Cumulus Linux software, we can now use our existing investments, like server management tools such as Chef, to configure networking switches. This utility helps us save significantly on costs while also increasing productivity, and we intend to leverage Cumulus Linux software more as we increase our use of container type modular data center architectures built on open source.”

Mount Pleasant Independent School District

“Mount Pleasant Independent School District always looks for new technologies to improve our data center operations and lower costs. Now mature and proven enough to look at for production deployment, open source software is a natural fit for this mission,” said Noe Arzati, Director of Technology, Mount Pleasant Independent School District. “Cumulus Linux’s platform is a natural fit for our environment because it integrates so well with OpenStack and our network virtualization solution. Because of its flexibility and easy integration, Cumulus Networks will play a large part in the next-generation data center we’re designing around these technologies.”

Ooyala

“At Ooyala, we have a distinct DevOps culture. Legacy 'command-line' solutions prevented us from extending automation processes similar to those in our server environment to the network infrastructure,” said Bao Nguyen, Network Engineer, Ooyala. “By integrating Cumulus Linux software, we were are able to maximize our prior investments in software and processes. We can now seamlessly utilize more open source and modern data center architectures into our environment without having to invest in a new tool or hire teams to support legacy solutions. Our productivity has increased significantly with Cumulus Networks, all without forcing us to increase the size of our team or our operational costs.”

UTSA

"Cumulus Networks enables us to give users maximum choice in hardware, software and tools so they can build a solution based on the problem at hand instead of deploying a solution because it’s the only thing a vendor provides,” said Carlos Cardenas, Associate Director, Applied Research in Cloud Computing, University of Texas at San Antonio. “With Cumulus Linux software as the networking OS, networking gear is finally at par with servers because users can manage their networking switches using the same tools as a Linux server. Because getting a switch up and running is now as familiar as deploying a server, our users have significantly reduced their opex investment.”

About Cumulus Networks

Cumulus Networks is bringing the Linux revolution to networking. Founded by veteran networking engineers from Cisco and VMware, Cumulus Networks makes the first Linux operating system for networking hardware and fills a critical gap in realizing the true promise of the software-defined data center. Just as Linux completely transformed the economics and innovation on the server side of the data center, Cumulus Linux software is doing the same for the network. It is radically reducing the costs and complexities of operating modern data center networks for service providers and enterprises. Cumulus Networks has received venture funding from Andreessen Horowitz, Battery Ventures, Sequoia Capital, Peter Wagner and four of the original VMware founders.
